Christmas music is on the radio, ornaments and wrapping paper have moved into the seasonal aisles, and Black Friday ads are being leaked left and right.  The holidays are coming.  Strike that, they’re here!  Get into the spirit with these holiday happenings all around the South Shore (and some drive-worthy events a bit beyond).  Fill your calendar with gingerbread house decorating, tree lightings,  musicals, parades, and more.

Best Books of 2014 for Kids
The James Library, Norwell

Book reviewer and librarian Shelley Sommer will present her popular “Best Books of 2014 for Kids”. She will talk about the best books for children of ALL ages (up to grade 8) for holiday gifts.  Buttonwood Books will be there if you want to make a purchase on the spot.

Blink! at Faneuil Hall

Blink! – the state-of-the-art light & sound extravaganza returns to Faneuil Hall Marketplace for a third year.  This magical light show uses over 350,000 LED lights to illuminate Boston’s skyline – to the song stylings of the Holiday Pops – in a seven-minute spectacle that runs continuously each evening.

Boston’s 73rd Annual Official Tree Lighting
Boston Common

The holiday lights throughout both parks will light up in sequence shortly before 8 p.m. when Mayor Walsh is joined onstage by Premier McNeil, members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and Santa Claus.  The show will close with a pyrotechnic display by MagicFire, Inc.

Chatham Bars Inn – Gingerbread House Workshops
Dec. 12, 13, 19 and 20
Chatham Bars Inn is hosting children’s Gingerbread House Workshops, where guests will be presented with freshly baked and built gingerbread houses, primed for their creative touch.  Colorful frosting and a bounty of eye-pleasing candies will be at the ready!

Edaville’s Festival of Lights
Nov 21-23, 26, 28-30, Dec 1-Jan1
Passengers relax comfortably in warm and dry coaches while riding through a spectacular holiday setting featuring an explosion of lights. Kids of all ages will enjoy an array of vintage amusement rides and a visit with Santa in one of our indoor play areas. Trains typically run on an hourly schedule beginning one hour after opening and the last train is at 8pm.

Fairy Christmas at the Hedge House Museum

This December, the Antiquarian Society presents a magical holiday celebration for the whole family – a Fairy Christmas at the historic Hedge House. Enter the elegant 1809 mansion into a fantasy wonderland; explore eight rooms decorated with handcrafted displays in an enchanting fairy theme. Visit the Fairy Queen and her attendants in their glittering throne room. A holiday shop will offer a selection of handcrafted ornaments, wreaths and fairy accessories for sale.

Gingerbread House Decorating

Hand-crafted clothing, children’s items, original artwork, wreaths, jewelry and more.  Each year new craftspeople and artists are featured. Support local artisans and the James in a charming historic New England atmosphere.

Holiday Pops
Symphony Hall, Boston

Special post-Christmas concerts feature screenings of the favorite holiday movie Home Alone with live orchestral accompaniment, and New Year’s Eve with the Boston Pops Swing Orchestra and bandleader Bo Winiker. During pre-Christmas concerts join conductor Keith Lockhart, the Boston Pops, and the Tanglewood Festival Chorus in performances filled with holiday music favorites, the traditional Pops sing-a-long, and even a visit from jolly old Santa Claus.
Kids Matinee Performances: These special family concerts feature a shorter program without intermission, and include family-friendly music, a children’s sing-along and post-concert photos with Santa and special treats. For those seated at the floor tables, there are kid-friendly menu options along with holiday treats.

Irving Berlin’s White Christmas: The Musical
