Rainy Day Science Part II

It’s raining. It’s pouring. The kids are B-O-R-E-D!  I didn’t have any crafts on hand to keep the boys busy today, so I went searching online.

I found some great ideas at ActivityTV.com.  They have crafts, science projects, cooking for kids and lots more.  What I loved about this site is that in addition to written text instructions, each project has a neat little video that walks you through it too.  This was fantastic for the kids, it helped them decide which project to choose, and made them feel more in control when we were actually doing it, because they knew what the next step was.

There were a ton of choices at the Activity TV website.  The boys voted unanimously to make the ERUPTING VOLCANO.  I was a little nervous, but the video made it look pretty tame, and it ended up being so much fun!  Matty and Sam got really into it, molding the volcano with sand, adding food coloring to make it look like a ‘real island’, and adding tiny toy dinosaurs to roam the land.  When the lava spilled out of the top, my 5-year-old declared it “Totally Awesome”.

I had everything we needed in the house:  An Empty water bottle, Glue, Vinegar, Baking Soda, Dish Soap, Food Coloring, and Sand (stolen from our soggy sandbox outside).  It didn’t take long to create, and we were even able to make it ‘erupt’ twice by adding a little more baking soda after the first wave of lava calmed down.

All in all, a very cool rainy day activity!
